Darmasiswa is a non-degree scholarship program provided by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia to students from abroad to study languages, arts and culture at various universities in Indonesia.
General Description
The Indonesian Institute of the Arts or ISI Denpasar – Bali is the only arts college in Indonesia that is ranked in the top one hundred of 2624 universities in Indonesia, webometrics ranking version 2022. ISI Denpasar has a Performing Arts Faculty with five Undergraduate Study Programs, namely Dance, Karawitan Arts, Puppetry Arts, Music, and Performing Arts Education. The Faculty of Fine Arts and Design has nine Bachelor and Applied Bachelor Study Programs including: Craft, Fine Arts, Interior Design, Visual Communication Design, Photography, Product Design, Fashion Design, Film and Television Production, and Animation. Masters Program, consisting of Masters in Art, Design and Art Education. Crowning the quality of higher education services, ISI Denpasar has a Doctor of Arts study program.
ISI Denpasar proclaims its 2020-2024 VISION, namely: “Realizing ISI Denpasar as a Center of Excellence for the Promotion of Arts and Culture Rooted in Local Wisdom, Based on Independent Learning-Independent Campuses, and Globally Competitive, as well as the Creation of an Academic Community with a Pancasila Spirit, Resilient, Dynamic, Critical, Creative, also Innovative”. Efforts to implement this vision are supported by a strategic actualization program, carried out with a policy of structuring publications with quality and substantive content; Socialization is oriented towards mainstreaming performance achievements in strengthening and advancing education, research and community service both independently and in partnership. Strategic actualization is also built with the motto: Global-Bali Arts and Creativity Center Hub (G-BACCH). This motto has become a motto and pledge in building mutual faith and determination to make ISI Denpasar progressive and dignified.
ISI Denpasar was officially founded on July 28 2003, was born, grew and developed in line with the dynamics and efforts to strengthen institutions, as well as the ongoing advancement of art scientific nomenclature. Since its status as the Indonesian Academy of Dance (ASTI) in 1967, and becoming the Indonesian Art College (STSI), in 1992, this higher arts educational institution has been consistent in its dedication to spreading the Indonesian spirit, based on local wisdom, as well as having a universal outlook and being competitive. global.
Creating a graduate profile that is strong, has a Pancasila spirit, is dynamic, critical, creative and innovative in the fields of creation, study, education, presentation and arts-culture-design entrepreneurship, ISI Denpasar in its latest achievements, has made various strategic efforts in improving the system, institutional development, strengthening the scientific nomenclature of art and design, improving the quality of human resources, building an ecosystem of cooperation and partnerships, as well as planning policy strategies that support the advancement of laboratory, studio and digital technology infrastructure, both hardware and software.
The Darmasiswa RI Scholarship Program is a scholarship program provided by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia to foreign students from friendly countries to study Indonesian language, arts and culture at universities in Indonesia. The nature of the Darmasiswa RI Scholarship program is a non-degree program which aims to promote Indonesian language, arts and culture to the international community. This program has also become a reciprocal provision of scholarships between the Indonesian government and other countries and has become an element of diplomacy.
This policy program has been implemented by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology regionally since 1974, initially only attended by participants from ASEAN member countries, and with continuous development until now the Darmasiswa RI Scholarship Program has been followed by participants from various countries in Asia, America, Europe, Africa and Australia. This program is very effective in introducing and promoting Indonesian language, arts and culture through the active role of representatives of the Indonesian government abroad.
Since 1998 the Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI) Denpasar has been trusted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia as one of the Arts Universities implementing the Darmasiswa RI Scholarship Program in the field of arts and culture. The active role of the Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI) Denpasar is solely to provide maximum support for the policy programs of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology through language, arts and cultural diplomacy which is a representation of the Soft Diplomacy policy line abroad. country of the Government of the Republic of Indonesia.
There were 577 participants in the Darmasiswa RI Scholarship Program from 1998 to 2019 who had taken art education at the Indonesian Art Institute (ISI) Denpasar, with an average number of participants per year of 26 people. This number shows the enormous interest of the international community in getting to know, studying and exploring the arts and culture of the archipelago, as well as providing an illustration that the Indonesian Art Institute (ISI) Denpasar has the ability to become a center of excellence in the competitive and professional field of arts and culture.
Bali’s position as a campuhan (crossing center) of world cultures since the VII century (Bali Padma Bhuwana), has a strategic contribution to the existence of ISI Denpasar, which has directly attracted Darmasiswa RI participants so far. Bali has noble cultural roots as well as being a showcase for innovation in art and culture in the world today, becoming a prestigious locus for every creative worker in the world who visits it. This important Bali potential is an added value for the implementation of Darmasiswa RI at ISI Denpasar. Another strategic thing, Bali provides easy access to accommodation, transportation, health and entertainment. The next advantage is that many Consulates General of countries in the world have offices in the Denpasar area, which will make it easier for scholarship recipients to communicate with their country’s representatives.
Program Details
Details of the Darmasiswa RI ISI Denpasar Scholarship Program consist of 20 (twenty) credits, 14 (fourteen) credits for classroom learning and 6 (six) credits in Bali Nata Bhuwana Plus. Twenty credits consist of 14 (fourteen) classroom learning credits and 6 (six) credits in Bali Nata Bhuwana Plus. 14 (fourteen) class learning credits consist of 2 (two) semesters, namely even semester and odd semester. The even semester consists of compulsory courses and elective courses. The mandatory subject is Indonesian with a weight of 2 (two) credits. Elective courses consist of:
- traditional Balinese painting with a weight of 3 (three) credits;
- wayang parwa performance with a weight of 3 (three) credits;
- legong heron-kuntir with a weight of 3 (three) credits;
- gambuh dance drama with a weight of 3 (three) credits;
- academic design with a weight of 3 (three) credits;
- archipelago ornaments with a weight of 3 (three) credits;
- Ashta Bumi Kosali with 3 (three) credits; or
- traditional theater musical with a weight of 3 (three) credits.
The odd semester consists of compulsory courses and elective courses. The mandatory subject is Indonesian with a weight of 2 (two) credits. Elective courses consist of:
- traditional carving techniques with a weight of 3 (three) credits;
- classical Balinese painting with a weight of 3 (three) credits;
- Indonesian literature with a weight of 3 (three) credits;
- classical musical repertoire with a weight of 3 (three) credits;
- traditional souvenirs with a weight of 3 (three) credits;
- kecak with a weight of 3 (three) credits;
- Balinese traditional wayang with a weight of 3 (three) credits; or
- Patopeng art with a weight of 3 (three) credits.
The learning weight of the Darmasiswa program in Bali Nata Bhuwana Plus is 6 (six) credits, consisting of:
- thematic workshops;
- work practice;
- dissemination; And
- cultural dialogue.
Lecture System
The class learning system follows regular lectures. ISI Denpasar applies semester credit units for participants in the Darmasiswa RI Scholarship Program. Semester credit units as a way to carry out educational programs in order to measure the progress of the participants’ studies. The lecture system consists of 2 (two) types, namely:
1. The Indonesian language course weighs 2 credits, carried out in classroom learning which takes place one week:
- 100 minutes face to face
- 120 minutes of structured academic activity
- 120 minutes independent academic activity
2. Elective courses with a total weight of 14 credits, are carried out in practical class learning where each course per week lasts 510 minutes (8.5 hours).
3. The Bali Nata Bhuwana Plus learning program is carried out in each semester break for 1-2 months intensively, consisting of:
- thematic workshops;
- work practice;
- dissemination; And
- cultural dialogue.
Bali Nata Bhuwana Plus learning is carried out outside and/or on campus. Participants of the Darmasiswa RI Scholarship Program are given the widest possible opportunity to participate in every Bali Nata Bhuwana Plus activity outside campus which is deemed to provide great benefits for the participants. The Bali Nata Bhuwana Plus activity had a very positive impact on the participants considering that learning other than in class would be able to foster interest and a strong sense of touch towards arts, culture and language after they made direct observations and experiences when participating in the activity.
Evaluation
A. Classroom Learning
- Evaluations and assessments related to the learning absorption capacity of the Darmasiswa RI Scholarship Program participants are carried out regularly at the end of each academic year, precisely in July of the current year.
- Evaluation and assessment are carried out based on the results of the lecturer’s monitoring of the participants during the lecture period, and based on the results of lectures, practicums and completion of assignments given by the lecturer to all participants.
- Evaluation and assessment results scores are informed via written notification.

The evaluation and assessment results refer to the list of letter grades and weight grades as follows;

B. Bali Nata Bhuwana Plus Learning
The Bali Nata Bhuwana Plus assessment is carried out during dissemination by the lecturer.
Academic Transcripts and Certificates
As final proof of completion of the program participated in by the participants, the Secretariat of the Darmasiswa RI Scholarship Program at Higher Education Institutions issues academic transcripts and certificates with graduation predicates consisting of 3 levels, namely; satisfactory, very satisfactory and with praise stated on the academic transcript. The Cumulative Achievement Index (GPA) as the basis for determining the degree of graduation from a study program is;
GPA 3.50 – 4.00: Predicate honors
GPA 3.01 – 3.50: Very satisfactory predicate
GPA 2.76 – 3.00: Satisfactory predicate
