Bachelor of Karawitan/ Gamelan/ Traditional Music of Bali

This area of study allows you to freely express your imagination to produce art works of both traditional and contemporary. It will compliment your on-going individual works such as research and creation. You will explore karawitan/gamelan/ traditional music as an end in itself as well as a mean for exploring other modes of art practice.

You are encouraged to initiate and organize external projects on which you will learn vital professional skills and develop a better understanding of the context for your work. Karawitan encourages students to embrace the possibilities for continued reinvention of the medium while also looking to gamelan’s long and rich history for inspiration. The program of study will challenge you to question and explore the possibilities of gamelan today and allow you to experiment with other performing art media, such as dance, puppetry, Music Dance Drama, and Modern Music, enabling you to follow your own particular interest as your work develops.

The program of study is practice-based and you will gain practical skills and knowledge of a wide range of ensambles whilst questioning and exploring the possibilities of gamelan today. Through a series of lectures, practices, seminar, discussions, and tutorials you will have the opportunity to explore a variety of ideas surrounding art practice. Other renowned artists are constantly offer sincere help to give new perspectives to your study as they bring their expertise and experience of the national and international art world into the practice. You will also provided a wide range of opportunities to be involved in several important events and performing arts such as the annual Bali Art Festival.

You will know how your art works are enjoyed, received and understood by participating in a performing art with students from across our karawitan programs. Our karawitan graduates are prominent players in art world that emanates from Bali. We value the idea of a medium specific studio environment, vitality and dynamism of a dialogue that brings art history into the contemporary context. Our students are characterized by their skill base, their inventiveness, conceptual ambition and professionalism.
